MENCS: Three Chevys fastest in happy hour

Darlington, S.C. — Chevrolet drivers, Ryan Newman, Chase Elliott, and Jimmie Johnson were the fastest three in happy hour from Darlington Raceway Friday afternoon.

Newman drove around the speedway in 28.641 seconds, Elliott was 0.031 seconds slower and Johnson was 0.082 seconds slower than Elliott. These three may have been fastest in single lap speed, but none of them cracked the top-five in the 10-lap average category. Newman was only seventh, Johnson was 10th and Elliott was 11th.

Kyle Busch, a six-time winner this year, had the fastest 10-lap average. Running 46 laps in final practice, only three drivers ran more laps than him. Of the other big winners this season, Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick, neither of them broke into the top-10 in single lap speeds. Harvick was 13th fastest in that bracket but was third quickest over 10 laps. Truex, who nearly won last year’s race, was only 24th quickest in single lap times and was 18th fastest, averaged over 10 laps.

Notably, Alex Bowman had the second fastest 10-lap average. He was also fourth quickest in single lap times in opening practice.

The last time the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series raced it was two weeks ago in Bristol, Tenn., on Bristol Motor Speedway, and Kurt Busch was the winner. At a track more than double the length, Busch was fifth fastest; one position behind his brother, Kyle. Kurt Busch had the sixth fastest 10-lap average.
