TBT: Kasey Kahne Wins Third Coca-Cola 600

In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we relive when Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series veteran driver Kasey Kahne captured his third career win in the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Kahne who joined the powerhouse of Hendrick Motorsports at the beginning of the 2012 season struggled early on with his No. 5 Chevrolet team.

Fellow competitor Greg Biffle who was the series points leader at the time looked as if he and his No. 16 Ford would walk away with the win after he dominated the race early on having led 204 laps.

However, when the night cooled the track off, Biffle was no match for Kahne.

“Kasey’s car was just better at night,” Biffle said.

Kahne would run away from the field leading 96 laps including the final 42 and beating the runner-up, Denny Hamlin by more than four seconds. Kyle Busch was third and Greg Biffle fourth.

The win marked No. 201 for Hendrick Motorsports and moved Kahne into a berth for the 12-car playoff Chase later in the season.

“It feels good to get a win for Hendrick Motorsports. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a year and a half, to drive for Hendrick Motorsports, Kahne said.”

Kahne had agreed in 2010 to join HMS but had to wait until 2012 for a seat to become available.

Note: Kahne will enter Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 in the No. 95 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Leavine Family Racing which he joined this season

While it will be his first race at CLT with the team, it’s a track where Kahne could really shine and walk away with a decent finish as his stats at the track speak for themselves.

In 28 Cup starts at the 1.5-mile track, Kahne has four wins, including his three wins in the Coca-Cola 600 to go along with an average finish of 12.77.
