MENCS: Kyle Busch Frustrated With Runner-up Finish at Martinsville

Kyle Busch has finished second three of the last four races. Monday afternoon in the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway, Busch led three times for 24 laps, but was unable to reel in the eventual race winner Clint Bowyer.

“He was fast enough there at the end to ‑‑ and had enough gap that he was able to hold us off. You know, just close. We’re right there, just not being able to knock it through,” Busch said of Bowyer.

Frustrated with his third runner-up finish of 2018, Busch noted “we’re trying” postrace.

Despite leading the driver standings by eight points over Martin Truex Jr., Busch prefers to celebrate in Victory Lane, and so far in 2018, he hasn’t been able to.

“I mean, we take solace, sure, but you know, ultimately we’re here to win each and every week. I know everybody is, but we’ve been that close each and every week, so we’re right there, we’re knocking on the door.”

Busch has led a lap in every race except the Daytona 500 for a total of 233 laps. Although he has been running upfront all season, the No. 8 hasn’t been leading on the most important lap, the last one.

“I wouldn’t say it’s one particular thing that we can pinpoint, we’ve just been beat by somebody kind of hitting it a little bit more than we have. And we’ve been the closest thing to everybody each and every week. We’re getting beat by different guys.”

Stewart-Haas Racing is showing that they are one of the top team so far in 2018 as the team has won four of the first six races of the season.

“The SHR team is certainly probably one of the better teams right now, but we’re right there knocking at their heels.”
