Flashback Friday: Clint Bowyer Wins the Bank of America 500

on

The 2012 Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway came down to a fuel mileage race. A race that would go on to be won by Clint Bowyer who was driving the No. 15, 5-Hour Energy Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing.

As the race was down to only a handful of laps only six cars were on the lead lap. Bowyer and Denny Hamlin battled it out to the finish but it was Bowyer who would go on to claim his third win of the 2012 season. Jimmie Johnson, Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch would round out the top 5 finishing order.

The win was Bowyer’s first win at Charlotte and his first at an intermediate track but the driver didn’t have enough fuel to do a celebratory burnout.

“I want to do a burnout! Am I ever going to get to do a burnout? said Bowyer in victory lane.”

Back in 2012 Bowyer and his team were still in contention for the Championship in only their first year together at MWR after Bowyer moved from Richard Childress Racing.

“It makes you almost giddy. It’s so much fun to come to the racetrack knowing that you’ve got cars that are capable of getting the job done. Who would have thought in a million years, after making the switch and coming over to a new family, and everything that was new, that we’d be in Victory Lane three times?” said Bowyer.

This Sunday is the Bank of America 500 and it will be the very race that marked the last time Bowyer won a NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series race. It’s been a long time since Bowyer has won but he is running better this year in the No. 14 for Stewart-Hass Racing and currently sits 17th in the points. Victory has come close with a second-place finish at Sonoma and another runner up finish the following week in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona in July.

Could Bowyer break his winless streak this weekend? We will find out come Sunday when the MENCS takes the green flag at 2pm ET at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
