MENCS: Eight Spots Up For Grabs in Elimination Race at Dover

on

There are only eight spots left in the Round of 12 of the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Two drivers secured their spot by virtue of race victories in the first two races of the Round of 16, and two others are more than a race-worth of points ahead of the driver in 12th position, which secures their place in the next round.

Last weekend it was Martin Truex Jr. winning the Tale of the Turtles 400 and this weekend it was Kyle Busch celebrating in Victrola lane after the ISM Connect. Both drivers have their spot in the next round of the playoffs. However, after Sunday’s race, two other drivers – Kyle Larson and Brad Keselowski – who could breathe a sigh of relief as they are far enough above the cutoff line that a last place finish next weekend at Dover wouldn’t hurt them from moving on.

Currently, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. holds the 12th and final transfer spot. On the outside looking in is Austin Dillon (0 points behind 12th), Ryan Newman (1 points behind 12th), Kurt Busch (17 points behind 12th) and Kasey Kahne (21 points behind 12th). These drivers can still race their way into the next round, but the only way to truly secure their spot is with a race win.

The Monster Energy Series heads to Dover International Speedway next weekend in the first elimination race of the playoffs.
