MENCS: Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr. Quickest in Opening Practice


RICHMOND, Va. – Matt Kenseth, who is winless in 2017 but still in the hunt for a playoff spot, and Martin Truex Jr., the current points and playoff points leader, laid down identical lap times and speed in opening practice for Saturday’s Federated Auto Parts 400.

Their lap times of 22.333 at 120.897 MPH was just a tad quicker than Kyle Busch’s 22.421 at 120.423 MPH. Kyle Larson, the first driver not behind the wheel of a Toyota, was fourth quickest with a lap of 22.423 at 120.104 MPH. Brad Keselowski, the only Ford machine in the top five, laid a lap of 22.429 at 120.380 MPH.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was sixth quickest while last week’s winner, Denny Hamlin, was seventh fastest.

Final practice comes up later today at 12 pm and qualifying at 5:45 pm.
