Come spring rain is no stranger to southern Virginia and over†the years NASCAR has gotten acclimated to the trials and tribulations of hosting race events on rainy weekends. Even after canceling nearly all of the on track action scheduled for Friday the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series was onto its second practice for the STP 500.
This practice may not be a great indicator for in race performance because the track was cooler and washed of rubber from the Friday storms.
Always good for a quick hot lap is Brad Keselowski, he topped Saturday’s opening practice with a speed of 94.406 mph. Fellow 2017 race winner Ryan Newman clocked in just behind the blue deuce at 94.092. Martin Truex Jr. Toyota was third quickest while Keslowski’s teammate Joey Logano was fourth.
Yesterday, during opening practice, Daniel Suarez backed his No. 19 Arris Toyota Camry into the turn three retaining wall and could only muster a lap at 92.056 mph for 34rd.
Remember, MENCS did not qualify because of rain and will start based on owner points. Expect comers and goers in the first stage.C1706_PRAC2
