NXS: Erik Jones Beats Teammates for Food City 300 Pole

Bristol, Tennessee — Erik Jones circumnavigated the world’s fastest half mile in fifteen seconds to wrestle the pole position away from his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Kyle Busch, for the FoodCity300.

“It’s fast,” said Jones about the race track, but what has made it even faster for this round of racing is the strip of PJ1 TrackBite track officials have added to the lower lane in hopes of moderating the high side’s advantage.

Jones says there’s “a lot of grip on the bottom” of the race track but the key to his record breaking lap time was getting his No. 20 Reser’s Main Steet Bistro Toyota “secure enough (to) where (he) can really hustle it.”

This is Jones’ tenth career pole and seventh of his rookie campaign – another record the young gun has broken.

Finishing the qualifying session in third, behind his JGR teammates was Daniel Suarez. Had Suarez not gotten squirrelly in the fourth turn he very likely could have bested Jones’ record time. Nevertheless, JGR will start the Food City 300 from the top three positions.

Brandon Jones and Austin Dillon rounded out the top-five.
