NSCS: Kevin Harvick Paces Opening Practice at Watkins Glen International

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Navigating the 2.454-mile circuit in 68.52 seconds, Kevin Harvick was fastest in the opening practice session of the weekend in advance of Sunday’s Cheez-It 355.

Although the California native is not known for his road course prowess, Harvick and his No. 4 team have been fast nearly each and every week of the 2014 season thus far — and that speed transferred over to the left and right turns at the famous Watkins Glen International circuit in New York State.

Continuing the trend of drivers who aren’t typically known for being exceptional road course drivers, Jimmie Johnson was second fastest in the session after circling the track in 68.992 seconds. Following a disastrous streak of races over the last month, Johnson and the No. 48 team look to rite the ship this weekend as the Chase for the Sprint Cup approaches.

Finishing second in the last three races at Watkins Glen, Brad Keselowski is out to finish one spot better this weekend. The 2012 series champion started the pursuit on a strong note by recording the the third fastest time in the session.

A.J. Allmendinger and Marcos Amrbose — who is in desperate need of a win to punch his ticket into the Chase — rounded out the top-five in the session.

Up next for the Sprint Cup Series is a 90-minute final practice session at 4:30pm ET.
