NNS: Ambrose Paces Final Practice With Blazing Fast Lap at the Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — A two-time winner at Watkins Glen International in Sprint Cup Series competition, Marcos Ambrose’s best chance at clinching a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup comes this weekend at the 2.5-mile road course in New York. Keeping this in mind, Ambrose and his Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) team are all-in this weekend to make it happen, and place both of their drivers in NASCAR’s version of the playoffs in what would be an unprecedented result.

To help achieve this, RPM has entered the former Australian V8 SuperCar driver in Saturday’s Nationwide Series Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen — and to no surprise — the team has asserted themselves as a contender during Friday’s practice sessions in preparation for the race.

Following a lap good enough for third in the opening practice session of the weekend, Ambrose navigated his No. 09 Ford Mustang around the Watkins Glen road course in 71.595 seconds in the final session of the day — which was good enough to beat Brad Keselowski by nearly four-tenths of a second.

The defending winner of the race, Keselowski has a car equally as good as that of Ambrose. After pacing the opening practice session of the weekend earlier in the day, it appeared that the Michigan native would do the same in the final session — that was until Ambrose laid down his scorching lap in the late stages of the 90-minute session.

Continuing what has been a strong start to the weekend for the Ford brand on Friday in the Nationwide Series, Keselowski’s teammate, Joey Logano, was third fastest in the session.

Rounding out the top-five was Road America winner Brendan Gaughan, and Kyle Busch — who despite his dominance of the series, has never won a race at Watkins Glen in a Nationwide car.

Up next for the Nationwide Series is qualifying on Saturday morning at 9:40am ET.
