Winding down the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship with only 3 races left. Tony Stewart has thrown down the gauntlet challenging Carl Edwards to step it up. But will Cousin Carl’s teammate, Matt Kenseth, be gunning for the guns at Texas instead?

Group A

Matt Kenseth – Ford has 10 wins at TMS, Kenseth with two himself in 2002 and the other in this year’s spring race. With Kenseth’s spring win, it put him atop of the driver ratings with an average finish of 6.8 at TMS. While teammate Carl Edwards may have more wins, Kenseth does have 12 top-5’s compared to Edwards’s 5.

Bench Pick: Jeff Gordon – Gordon snagged 1 win in the spring of ’09 and also has 2 poles. Jimmie Johnson may have a slightly better start average of 9.3 to Gordon’s 9.8 but Johnson has yet to win a pole at this track.

Group B

Clint Bowyer – Bowyer has 3 top-5s, the most recent was a 2nd place finish in the spring race after leading 44 laps. This improved his overall average of to 13.4 and placed him 9th in the driver ratings at TMS.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. – Last year at TMS was a mixed pair when he finished 8th in the spring but 25th in the fall, which is representative of his average 15.7 finish in the last 6 years there. He finished 9th in the spring, but hopefully the pattern won’t repeat itself again for this race. Overall, he has a win in 2000 and has 2 poles to his credit at TMS.

Bench Pick: Ryan Newman – Newman has 2 back-to-back poles at TMS, but they were from earlier in his career back in 2005. Hasn’t done started well recently here, as the 14th start in the spring points out, but he did pick up both poles at New Hampshire this year, started 2nd at Darlington, and started 6th in the Charlotte Chase race.

Bench Pick: Kasey Kahne – Kahne has been behind Newman in the average start position for the season among Group B drivers. For TMS, Kahne got a pole, along with the win, in spring of 2006 race, when he was with Everham Racing. For intermediate tracks this season, he got the poles at Darlington and Atlanta, and has picked up other top-5 starts at New Hampshire, Kansas, and Kentucky.

Group C

David Ragan – I have 1 starting pick left for Ragan, and I decided to use him for this race. Ragan picked up the pole in the spring race and finished 7th. This was a follow-up performance to the fall race in 2010 where he started 5th and finished 8th.

Bench Pick: Paul Menard – Menard sits at the top among Group C drivers for best average starts during this season. His best start at Texas was 5th back in the spring of 2009.
