Not Your Father’s NASCAR News
By: DJ DeSpain
February 3rd was the 11th annual NASCAR Media Day down in Daytona Beach, Florida. Approximately 300 members of television, radio, internet and print media attended the event held just outside Daytona International Speedway to interview more than 50 drivers across NASCAR’s three national series – the Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series. ESPN, Speed, Sirius NASCAR Radio and NASCAR.com were broadcasting throughout the day.
This was a pretty big deal that ended with the Budweiser Shootout selection on Speed that evening. One big media gorge fest of news streaming throughout the day. Gone are the experiences from years past when a fan got their race news a month after the events via a magazine, or at best, a week later in a weekly journal such as NASCAR Scene (rest in peace, January 2010).
All this media coming through instantaneously and what were the big stories on Twitter?
- Carl Edwards’ ankle
- Denny Hamlin’s knee
- Kevin Harvick’s flu
- And all the babies being born between now and August (Edwards, Johnson, Sadler, Montoya, and Gordon)
At one point, I was trying to figure out if I was getting NASCAR news or watching a medical drama. Send Patrick Dempsey to the in-field care center! Stat!
Oh, and some of the other big stories of the day… Danica, Danica, and Danica.
Besides Danica, there were other stories scattered here and there during the day:
- Johnson tops the media poll for predicted 2010 season winner
- Spoiler coming back to the car, eliminating the wing that nobody liked
- Not penalizing drivers if a caution comes out if they come down pit row under green
- Bump drafting OK but yellow line rule here to stay for now
- Bigger restrictor plate for Daytona, adding extra 12-14 mph in extra horsepower
- Consistent start times for the Sprint Cup series
- Prize purses cut by 10 percent
Finally, racing news arrives as fast, if not faster, than the cars in the news. I would hate to have to find out about all of the above a month later when I’m in Atlanta covering the races.
