The Competition Caution 400 (formerly known as the Brickyard 400)
Now that the tire dust has finally settled from yesterday’s race, let’s look at what I feel was the biggest damage done to the sport of Cup racing, sacrificing driver safety for the goodwill of the fans. That NASCAR had to resort to bringing out 6 competition cautions due to tire issues was a shame and I expect Chris covered that issue with his article. However, my thoughts are that if NASCAR was bringing out the competition cautions due to safety issues, then they should have expanded on that by not changing the field during the pit stops…
Tires Steal Show at 15th Running of Brickyard
This year the true story is the Goodyear tires. With NASCAR having to throw that many competition cautions in one race is pretty ridiculous. 30+ laps of fuel and only 15-19 laps on their tires made this year’s event pretty bad…
Andy Petree’s Comments at the Brickyard 400
Dr. Jerry Punch announced with about 30 some odd laps left that NASCAR had issued each team an additional 2 sets of tires on top of the ones already issued. Johnson Kisses the Bricks, Horrible Race
Jimmie Johnson became the second person to win the Brickyard 400 from the pole, but that was one of the worst races I have ever seen. I know that Goodyear and NASCAR was doing their best, but let’s face it, that many competition cautions in one race is ridiculous. I don’t want to discredit Johnson for his performance, because he was consistently one of the best racers on the track today, but I have to wonder what the result would have been if there had been a better playing field with the tire situation.
