Will he or won’t he?
Mark Martin…. perennial close-but-no-cigar contender for the championship is hanging up his shingle after Atlanta. Just not quite there before but now he’s having the best start of his career and after the race ended at Atlanta, he’s still the points leader.
He says he done and handing over the reins to Regan Smith.
Thanks for the memories, Mark. Enjoy your twilight years. Have a cold one on me.
I don’t think so. I’m not buying it. He’s not going to quit now. Not at the top of the game.
It would be one thing if he did retire before the season even started. But he was supposed to play that scene two years ago when he said that 2005 was his last year. I’m not a Rusty Wallace fan but at least he did give up the ghost when he said he would that year. It wasn’t the Mark Martin good-bye tour but he was right there with Wallace when he kept saying he was done.
I hope he does have his dignity now and will give up gracefully. But team owner Ginn has already put it out there saying that if Martin wants to race, he’s got a car for him and I doubt he can’t pony up the money for Regan to still race too.
So I’m saying it here and now… Regan will drive the Army car that Martin has been driving all along and Martin will drive at Bristol with another car provided by Ginn.
Martin can’t resist. He will race. He won’t quit now.
Think I’m wrong, tell me so.

Well your argument has three flaws. Number one, he is supposed to be in Florida with his son Matt at a race for him. So with that alone, I don’t believe your prediction will come true.
Number two, if Mark actually begins to think about the points race, his season takes an immediate nose dive. No one will ever dispute that he is one of the best drivers all time, but let’s face it, he can’t get it done when it comes to a championship. If he begins down that road, it will end with the same result that it has for his entire career, a dead end. Unfortunately for Mark.
And number three, I have not seen him happier. For the first time in his life, he doesn’t have to think about the points. That has lifted such a huge burden off of his shoulders, so I believe that he gets through this weekend to eliminate all of this focus and talk. Once he misses, the points argument will be put to bed and he can continue racing for fun, money and no worries.
Well Tuesday afternoon, Mark held a conference call with reporters where he again stated that he will not be racing at Bristol this week. Bill Weber over at NASCAR.com has an article out today on this very topic. Martin looking forward to time away, Smith’s debut.
Conference call on Tuesday? That leaves five days for Martin to change his mind. A lot can happen in five days.
