NASCAR Getting Rained Out…

DJ made this prediction back in February 2004 in an article posted here on RubbingsRacing.com.

I can see it now, the Starbucks 400 in Seattle with a grunge band singing the national anthem. However, nobody will actually race there because it will be constantly rained out!

In NASCARs never ending quest to take over the world, they are looking yet again to expand outside of their footprint. The latest location is Seattle. Now I’m no rocket scientist, but last I checked, that might be a difficult place to run due to rain…everyday. But rain is not the only thing holding that venture back. Apparently, even with the billions of dollars funneled in by corporations, high dollar suites, wine parties, and executives moving more and more into the world of racing, Rep. Larry Seaquist said this to the Seattle Times:

“These people are not the kind of people you would want living next door to you. They’d be the ones with the junky cars in the front yard and would try to slip around the law.”

That has got to be one of the most absurd, derogitory, malicious, and idiotic statement I believe I have ever heard. Open your mind. If I lived in Seattle, I would want to have one of the largest revenue generators in the world come to my neck of the woods. Think of the impact that would have on the local economy. Let’s face it, race fans spend money…LOTS of money. If you live in the WA area, complain to your representative and tell him that he is not acting with the best interest of your district at heart. Here is his contact info:

Rep. Larry Seaquist
(D) 26th LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT
Olympia Office:
317 John L. O’Brien Building
PO Box 40600
Olympia, WA 98504-0600

Now, I’m not saying I want to see a track in WA, because it means one of the tried and true, proven tracks will probably have their races reduced or outright eliminated. Personally, I say, if they don’t want us, we definately don’t want them. I also believe that NASCAR has begun to extend itself a little too much. Yet again, NASCAR is driven by the almighty dollar and to getting more “new” fans. They will do this even at the cost of losing lifetime, loyal fans who have been just as instrumental in the growth of this sport as the France family.

What I thought was more ignorant was what Washington state’s house speaker Frank Chopp said regarding Richard Petty when asked by reporters if he was planning on meeting Petty for the racetrack sales pitch:

“You mean the guy who got picked up for DUI? That guy?”

Chopp was of course corrected regarding his ignorance and has since issued an apology to Petty directly even though he wasn’t aware of what Chopp was apologizing about to him.

Obviously, Chopp wasn’t about to face the ire of NASCAR fans sullying the King’s honor.

Sounds like Chopp needs to hire himself a new personal assistant or PR expert to help him avoid sticking his foot in his mouth and Petty needs a personal assistant that knows what is going on…just a thought. No harm, no foul, the King was not really damaged.

Sounds like nobody was really paying attention to that one…..including the participants.
