Sad Times Ahead
Well, There are 43 drivers for Rockingham, but not all on merit.
Here we are. We had 45 teams show up for the Rockingham race. There are 43 slots. That would usually mean that there would be 5 provisionals and then two divers would go home. But not now. I don’t understand this. 38 drivers qualified, there were only two drivers who got provisionals and only two drivers that went home. In my book that means there are only 40 drivers for the race. But apparently NASCAR decided to backfill the last three spots with those who did not qualify on their speed or on provisional markings.
So we will have a field of 43 teams. Is NASCAR planning on doing this for all races? If so, I expect prices to go up for races. They are already outrageous. When we had our tickets to Atlatna Motor Speedway, ticket prices were already at $105 per seat. That was almost 4 years ago. What are they going to be 5 years from now?
I recall Brian France’s comments about how important it was to have the best drivers, not necessarily the most drivers, was more important. Now it seems that they are buying in competition. When is the line drawn in the sand. When is NASCAR going to decide what its stance is? Is it the competition? Or is it the number? By giving sub-standard teams the abiltiy to show up for the race? Is this the right way to approach this problem? I don’t know. I don’t like it. I’ll let you know more of my opinions as the season progresses.
